How Abacus Math Helps Overcome Math Phobia

Relevance of Abacus Math In Overcoming Math Phobia?

Many people find mathematics frightening right from childhood. Numerous children fear numbers and may still do so even after college. This fear is often referred to as Math Phobia. Abstracts can be difficult for humans to recognize and make friends with. Numbers are certainly abstract.

Multiple formulae and complex arithmetic operations can make it difficult for many. Teaching young children how to relate to numbers and visualize them is important. It is now established that learning Abacus Math helps to overcome Math Phobia. We will now discuss how Abacus Training help in transforming abstract numbers into objects, thus helping in enhancing mathematical skills.

Student Abacus

You may have heard of the ancient Chinese/Japanese calculating device, The Abacus. The Abacus is one device that can give numbers an image that a child can visualize and feel. This calculating device, called the Student Abacus, is used to train students in Abacus Math.

Abacus has a wooden frame that is divided horizontally by a bar. A few vertical rods have beads on the upper and lower decks. These beads represent numbers and allow you to calculate single-digit numbers through many digits. You can also use all the arithmetic operators. You can even solve roots. Children can see numbers in the image of the beads. These numbers are not abstract anymore.

How To Use An Abacus?

Before a child can use an Abacus device for calculation, they must be trained in its usage and methods. You will need to be trained in an Abacus Class and practice it regularly at home. The child can use a Virtual Abacus to perform mental math that involves multiple digits. (The child can visualize an Abacus and move beads mentally to complete the calculation).

Abacus students are required to master the techniques of using the Abacus tool effectively. The gradual process starts with simple addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Students then move on to the stage where they can develop Mental Math skills.

Abacus Math

1. Addition and Subtraction

Before beginning Abacus learning, one must first understand the Abacus Tool. The unit rod is the rod in the middle of the Abacus' extreme right rod. Any subsequent rods to the left of that rod would be in the tens, hundreds and so forth. There are tens to millions of place value calculations. When a child can understand the structure of the Abacus beads and their value starting at the unit rod, they will be able to solve single-digit additions. The upper deck has one Abacus bead with a numeric value of 5, and the lower deck has four beads with a numeric value of 1 each. The value is only achieved when the bead touches the horizontal bars.
If we need to add 1 + 2, we will move one bead from the lower deck towards the Horizontal bar. To add 2, move 2 beads from the unit rod towards the Horizontal bar. Three beads touch the Abacus' horizontal bar, giving you a value of 3.
To solve a sum, you must start at the unit's rod, then move to the left rod to solve for tens, hundreds and so forth. The same method is used to solve addition and subtraction sums.

2. Multiplication On Abacus Instrument

Let's look at this sum to understand how we can multiply on Abacus.
Let's say you need to solve 5x2.
We will place 5 on the extreme left and 2 on our Abacus Tool on the extreme right.
We will now place 0 on our unit rod and 1 onto the 10's rod to multiply any number of digits on an Abacus. If the multiplication is 2 digits, the result will be on the unit rod. The 10's rod will hold the result of the second digit, which must be on the 100's rod. And so on. The multiplication result will be the final position's bead value.Relevance of Abacus Math in overcoming Math Phobia?
